Finish Process
Finishing is one of the most important steps in making high quality plantation shutters. You will see from the steps
outlined below that these shutters undergo a rigorous finishing process.
Unfinished Shutters
Unfinished Basswood Plantation Shutters come already production sanded. This means they are ready to finish. These
shutters go through all the same stations in the factory that the finished shutters do before they are primed or stained.
Painted Shutters
- Production Sanding
- Primer Coat
- Sand with 320 grit sandpaper
- Paint Topcoat 1
- Re-sand
- Paint Topcoat 2
Stained Shutters
- Production sanding
- Stain
- Clear Coat 1
- Rubbed with Steel Wool
- Clear Coat 2

Number of Hinges per Panel by Panel Height:
2 Hinges: up to 72” 3 Hinges: 72” to 95” 4 Hinges: 95” and above
Number of hinges also depends upon panel width and whether multiple panes are hinged together (bi-folded).
More hinges may be used than specified above if necessary).
Divider rails recommended in panels 72” high or higher.
Hinge Configuration (Folding):
Virtually any hinge configuration is possible on your Basswood Plantation Shutters. This allows your shutters can fold
any way you desire. You can have one shutter panel hinge to the left and another to the right, bi-fold hinging, or even tri-fold
and quad-fold if needed. You can have one shutter panel or six or more if needed. I suggest you reference Configuration Options For Plantation Shutters for illustrations of the most popular hinging configurations. In addition to the ones shown on that page, we can do any
custom configuration desired as long as it falls within specifications.
Panel Construction:
Stile and rail joints are solidly doweled and glued. Painted and unfinished paint grade Basswood plantation shutters may
utilize finger joinery in the stiles only. This provides for additional stability and resistance to warping. Stained shutters
will not have finger joints unless the height necessitates it, usually around 72 inches long or longer. The "fingers" of
the finger joint are NOT visible from the front of the shutters. They are only visible when looking at the stile from the
side. The front maintains a smooth transition from one piece of wood to the next.
Overhead Track Systems
Basswood plantation shutters utilize 2 types of track systems: Bi-Fold and Bi-Pass. Basswood does not
have a standard configuration for these systems, but each system is custom designed and made for the specific application.
Bi-Fold Overhead Track Systems In a bi-fold configuration, shutter panels are hinged
together and therefore fold against each other, similar to a closet door. The track helps to guide and support the panels.
Bi-fold plantation shutters can be configured to where panels open all to one side or to where they open to both sides of
the door. Panels must be hinged together in multiples of two.
Bi-Pass Overhead Track Systems In a bi-Pass configuration, two or more shutter panels
are hung from an overhead track and slide behind and past each other. Note that the louvers must be closed for the plantation
shutters to slide past each other. This is a great option for where space is an issue since the panels never protrude into
the room. Bi-Pass is only available with a double or triple (or more) overhead track. An extended overhead track is also
available that allows the panels to be slid completely past the door for full view.
