Measuring for custom plantation shutters is one of the easiest, but most critical steps.  The way you measure for inside mount or outside mount plantation shutters differs slightly, so please follow the instructions below.

Tape Measure Picture

Although not necessary, measuring for interior wood plantation shutters is most easily accomplished with an assistant.  Measure with a steel tape measure to ensure accuracy.  Reference the illustration of Tape Measure Fractions if necessary.

Measure the width and height at three points each as shown in the pictures below.  For larger windows, you may want to take a few intermediate measurements.

You will also need to measure your window's backspace (Figure 1).  The backspace of a window ensures proper louver clearance and operation for your plantation shutters.  When measuring backspace, be sure to take into consideration anything which may inhibit the louvers from opening all the way.  This may be window trim, locks, opening cranks, or even the window itself.

To ensure the best fit for your plantation shutters, you will also want to measure your window diagonally each way.  The difference between the diagonal measurements will tell you if your window is out of square.  In general, less than 1/4 inch difference is considered normal, between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch is considered out of square, and greater than 1/2 inch is considered greatly out of square.  Window squareness affects which type of Frame and Mount you choose for your plantation shutters.

Inside Mount

Measure the width and height of the window opening at the points where the plantation shutters will be mounted (on the inside portion of the drywall or trim).  Consider whether the drywall or trim narrows further back into the window opening (See Figure 1).  If so, you will want to take the narrower of measurement A or B if that is where you are going to mount your plantation shutters.  If your window has a window sill, measure the height from the window sill to the top of the window opening.  Most importantly for inside mount plantation shutters, measure the actual window opening (do not make any deductions).  For an inside mount, the factory will make all necessary deductions from your window size to ensure that your plantation shutters fit into your window.

For inside mount plantation shutters, always round your measurements DOWN to the nearest 1/16th inch.  Rounding up may result in plantation shutters that are too wide or too long for your window.  For example, if the actual measurment falls between 3/16" and 1/4", round down to 3/16.  When ordering, use the narrowest width and shortest height.

Outside Mount

For outside mount plantation shutters, measure the area you want covered with the plantation shutters (NOT the window itself).  Take into consideration whether you want the frame mounted on your drywall, on top of your trim, or outside of your trim.  The outside edge of your shutter frame will come to the outside edge of the measurements you provide.  If mounting your shutter outside your trim, make sure you add enough room for the shutter frame to clear your trim (see Detailed Frame and Mount Measurements to see the width of your frames).  For outside mount plantation shutters, the factory will NOT take any deductions from your measurements.

Café Plantation Shutters

Café plantation shutters are simply any plantation shutters whose height does not cover the entire window.  Café plantation shutters can be mounted either inside or outside mount.  Measure café plantation shutters as specified above in the instructions for your appropirate inside or outside mount.  However, your height measurement should extend only to the top of the shutter as shown by the red arrow in the illustration to the right.  When ordering, you will specify if your shutters are café style.

Odd Shaped Windows

Odd shaped windows require a template to be made of the window opening.  This is an easy step, but is crucial for the factory to accurately match your specific window.  Please see our instructions on How To Make An Accurate Template for details.
